    Q&A: Olympian Wenda Nel [400m hurdles]

    Where did it all start?

     Since I can remember I had a love and passion for sport. Fortunately I was able to grow up in a sport loving family and I was surronded with sport activities since I was a little girl. From there I discovered my God given talent and build on that.

     What would you want to tell your 12 year old self?

     Remember to always do what you love and never let anyone make you feel inferior and unworthy for doing it.

     What is your most treasured sporting memory?

     I’m fortunate to have experienced a variety of sporting events, but if I have to choose one, it will be that moment when I realized I’ve made my first final at the World Championships in 2015. Crossing the finish line in the semi-final knowing I had given my all, was such a life changing moment not only in my sporting career but also in life. I was filled with satisfaction of knowing how it felt to fight for what you want.

     What is the best thing about being a female athlete?

     Apart from my big passion for sport, I see it as an opportunity to inspire people and I will always try to show them that no matter the circumstances, there is always hope in life. Being an athlete also helps me to be a healthy human being.

     What is the worst thing about being a female athlete?

     At times it feels that females doesn’t always get the recognition they deserve, but I do believe it is getting better and that we can make a big difference in the world for being female athletes.

     If you could change one thing about women’s sport what would it be?

     It will provide so many opportunities for female atheletes if we can have more media coverage and more marketing amongst women.

     What would you want others to know about what it means to be a female athlete?

     I believe it is one of the most inspiring titles to have. For me being an athlete means that I’m proactive about my health, it makes me realize that feeling strong is also beautiful. It helps me to embrace my inner and outer strengths and guides me to express my confidence in a positive way that it inspires those around me. It also guides me in how to handle life situations better. It gives me determination to never give up.
